You hear the term “custom” a lot from builders, contractors and manufacturers, but few of us know they mean when they say custom built.
The word custom as an adjective means “made specially for individual customers.” To understand the term, first, we must examine the different types of construction projects or builds.
Production built – A production built home or home improvement project is one which has been designed and built in mass quantities. Because high volume lowers cost, this is generally the most cost effective option. Although this is the most cost effective, the quality may be lower than a custom build and the design options are limited.
Semi Custom-built – For added cost, semi custom-built projects offer consumers more options. The look and feel of the design is the same, but there are various options to the design. Either the manufacturer or builder has different design options or they offer a variation in what they can do such as an added room to a home, an upgrade in materials or change in color. Typically, there is an additional cost for upgraded amenities, but this is a good option that’s still somewhat cost effective.
Custom built – Custom means the company designs, builds and installs your project to your specifications. The great thing about custom builds is that you get a unique product and you have input in the designing process. You tell the contractor what style you’re looking for and they present you with design options. Once you choose a design, they move forward and build you exactly what you want.
Another benefit to custom projects is that it makes more sense as an addition to your home because it fits your style and the style of the home. Custom homes and construction projects come at a higher price because you get more, you get a custom design built to your specifications. Generally, this is a more expensive option because of the time it takes to build, but also because custom projects are usually using higher grade materials for the custom work. If you have the money, it is well worth the investment to get exactly what you want.
Now that we know the different types of construction build options, it’s up to you to decide which option is best for you. If you’re looking for the least expensive option, then production or semi custom-built projects might be your best bet. However, if you want something very specific, want a higher quality product and don’t mind spending more, then a custom build is the best option for you because you get better quality products built for your specific needs.
